This course is designed to appeal to the working geologist or recent graduate wishing to consolidate their professional qualifications in the mining industry on either a part-time or full-time basis. Mine geologists are an essential part of the mining production cycle and thus less susceptible to the cyclical uncertainties often associated with mineral exploration. The profession spans traditional geology and mining engineering, and thus requires a unique blend of skills generally not provided by most geology postgraduate programs.
Four-year undergraduate degree, with the award of a bachelor degree in engineering, a Graduate Diploma in Engineering or a Bachelor of Science degree with honours, or equivalent, in an appropriate field and at a better than average level of performance. Applicants with other qualifications and experience may only be admitted with the consent of the appropriate senior academic.
This course is one year full-time or equivalent part-time study.
The course requires a program of study consisting of course and project units. Course units can be selected from the full range available in the postgraduate diploma including specialised units offered in the final two years of the Bachelor of Scienceor Bachelor of Engineering degrees at the Western Australian School of Mines, but excluding any units previously taken as part of the postgraduate diploma or honours programs, and units offered specifically as part of the Master of Science (coursework) degree. Instruction in these special units may take the form of tutorials, together with supervised reading and practical work. Project units could involve both field and laboratory work related to the special units or units being taken. Students are required to submit a written report or dissertation.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
