Relate theories to specific practice problems. Topics covered may include losses and grieving, trauma, sexual abuse, depression, anxiety, anger, drug and alcohol misuse, suicide and self-harm, sexual health, and school-based problems. When possible, invited practitioners, chosen for their familiarity with the issues to be discussed, will give lectures and practical demonstrations. Assessment of the potential for harmful behaviour to others or oneself, and indicators of serious mental health problems, will be discussed. It is expected that students will be able to identify changes in their thinking and practice that indicate an awareness of safe and respectful counselling. This unit also considers professional and ethical issues that are central to the theory and practice of counselling. Students will reflect on the moral assumptions they bring to their counselling practice, and will identify beliefs and values that support ethical and responsible conduct towards clients. Ethical dilemmas will be raised for discussion. Attention will be given to the importance and qualities of a collaborative therapeutic relationship. |
