Introduction
Cartography is a science-based discipline within the area of the spatial sciences that is concerned with the representation, analysis and management of data related to the earth's physical and man-made features in areas such as topographic and thematic mapping, photogrammetry and remote sensing, computer assisted mapping and geographic information systems. Information delivery and representation on the web is emerging as a new and important area in the spatial sciences. Internet functionality and the ability for users to perform interactive analysis of maps and spatial databases incorporating multimedia communication principles places new demands on spatial science professionals. This course in multimedia cartography provides the fundamental background for professionals in this rapidly developing area and develops specialist knowledge and expertise in the area of internet design and multimedia.
Additional Introductory Information
The Department of Spatial Sciences also offers a fourth year for honours in cartography, which leads directly into the Master of Science (Surveying and Mapping) or the Doctor of Philosophy.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
One TEE Mathematics subject. STAT elements considered are E and Q.
Specific Requirements
Students are required to have access to, or possess, a portable electronic programmable calculator with hard wired trigonometrical subroutines and a minimum capacity of 10 significant figures. Students will receive information concerning an appropriate purchase at their first lecture period. Attendance at field excursions and survey camps is compulsory. Students who do not attend will not have completed the course requirements. All degree students should seek employment in their field during the summer vacation. Three months approved practical experience is required before a cartography degree will be awarded. STAT elements considered for mature age entry are E and Q.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning (advanced standing) are encouraged from applicants and are assessed on an individual basis.
Duration and Availability
The course is three years full-time or equivalent part-time study.
Course Organisation
This course provides graduates with expertise in important areas of interactive multimedia related to the practice of cartography, as well as a foundation in the core areas of the cartography discipline. The first year of the course introduces students to the internet and multimedia design, as well as an introduction to map design and computer mapping. During the second year students investigate areas such as information architecture, e-commerce design, dynamic environment design issues, search system design, relational database design and web application design related to the Internet. Students also develop analytical and mapping expertise for handling spatial data. In the final year the course focuses on higher level evaluation and internet project work and spatial data collection and management.
Professional Recognition
Graduates are eligible to apply for associate membership of the Mapping Sciences Institute, Australia (MSIA) and may also obtain membership of the Spatial Sciences Institute (SSI).
Career Opportunities
Cartographers have a diverse range of career opportunities in the private and government sectors. Graduates with well-developed IT, Internet and multimedia skills are in high demand to meet specific needs across many areas of industry where online data delivery, query and analysis are required. Graduates in these areas are required to develop and maintain data management systems.
