Syllabus: | Introduces hypothesis development and testing, and the critical evaluation of scientific information. Covers key aspects of teh management of biological data, including data storage, manipulation, interrogation, analysis and presentation. Emphasis will be placed on the use of spreadsheets to display and manipulate data, apply calculations, statistical opeartors and queries to investigate and interpret the meaning of diverse biological types. The rationale for presenting data in graphical or tabular format, and the most appropriate use of common graph types will be discussed, including their presentation in a format suitable for publication in scientific journals. The use of word processing, presentation programs and databases will be highlighted as alternative means of displaying and managing biological data and information. |
