Syllabus: This unit will focus on the unique linguistic and artistic practices of Borneo's indigenous and non-indigenous communities. Language differences, similarities and uses amongst and between various ethnic groups, societies and cultures will be explored to enable a better understanding of the complexity of identifying the origins and boundaries of languages and dialects in order to subsequently investigate the extent and impact of lingua franca (such as Malay and Iban) as an outcome of modernisation and industrialisation in Borneo. Arts and crafts (such as weaving, carving, tattooing, beading, pottery, brassware and so on) tendencies as well as clothing styles specific to indigenous and non-indigenous cultures of Borneo, with particular emphasis on their socio-cultural origins, traditional significance, uniqueness and contemporary relevance, will also be addressed. By combining the tools of anthropological and linguistic investigation, this units aims to provide sufficient familiarity with the origins, evolution, preservation and extinction (in some cases) of indigenous and non-indigenous languages, arts and crafts, supplemented with real life experiences within communities and societies in contemporary Borneo.
