Area: Centre of Excellence in Cleaner Production
Credits: 25.0
Contact Hours: 3.0
Tutorial: 2 x 3 Hours Quarterly
Syllabus: Sustainable technology development is implemented through the design of new industrial facilities that produce goods with a much lower impact on the environment. Green engineering - or environmentally conscious design of industrial processes and plants - is aimed at innovative ways to incorporate environment and sustainability considerations into the design of industrial facilities (with particular relevance for the petro-chemical, minerals processing, energy and food processing industries), leading to lower levels of environmental impact during construction, start up, operation, maintenance and decommissioning stages of the industrial facility. Outlines the basic concepts of green engineering design. It addresses design-related opportunities in conceptual design, feasibility study, detailed engineering, construction and start up phases. The concepts are illustrated with practical examples from various industry sectors.
