Syllabus: | Exploration of the biotechnology industry, including traditional forms and recent developments in biotechnology. Examination of how biological processes can be harnessed to perform or supplement technical processes, including their role in developing renewable and sustainable systems for agriculture and industry. Overview of the modern biotechnology industry and applications of biopharmaceuticals, transgenics, genomics, proteomics, and monoclonal antibody technology, DNA chips as analytical and diagnostic tools, and rational drug design. Differences and similarities of the biotechnology industry in developed and developing countries are examined. Principles for objective assessment of positive or negative claims about biotechnology, approaches to decision-making, analysis of arguments about scientific topics, and to the development of clear and precise skills for writing scientific and business-related documents. |
