| Syllabus (HB): | This Unit equips students to identify and apply laws governing publication that concern media professionals, including journalists and others employed in the various media streams. Students are equipped to identify, analyse and apply these laws when seeking and preparing material for publication to avoid legal liability while exploiting the limits of freedom of speech. These laws cover statute and common law, and include laws governing defamation and other reputation protection laws; confidentiality and secrecy; incitement; privacy; freedom of information; contempt of court; offensive material and material subject to official classification codes; copyright; and other forms of media regulation. Students undertake legal research and analysis and present oral and written argument using legal discourse protocols; and undertake news reporting assignments involving the court or parliamentary proceedings. |
