196904 v.5 Master of Engineering Science (Mining Geomechanics)
MEngSc(Curtin)
This course is not available to International Onshore Students on Student Visas
Introduction
The course is especially designed for practising mining, civil and geological engineers, and also mine and engineering geologists. The units offered deal with modern methodologies and the state-of-the-art in mining and mine environmental geomechanics. Course attendees may become geotechnical specialists or technical managers. Career paths for the geotechnical specialist include in-house specialists in mining and petroleum companies, consultants, academics, researchers, and technical specialists for mine supply organisations.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
A four-year bachelor degree with honours in a relevant discipline or a Graduate Certificate in Mining Geomechanics. Students with lesser qualifications will be directed to enrol in the Graduate Certificate in Mining Geomechanics.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
Duration and Availability
This course is designed to be a two-year part-time course, however it would be possible to complete the entire program during 18 months of full-time study. This option may be attractive for international students. It is recommended that students complete the course within four years. The mode of study is modular or block release type where students undertake four units (short courses) over an intensive three week period. Four teaching sessions, each of three weeks duration, will be required and the fifth and final session has been set aside for design and research project (or dissertation) completion. A maximum of eight short course units may be offered in any calendar year.
Intermediate Awards 1
A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate award(s) approved for this course are:
Intermediate Awards 11
Graduate Certificate in Mining Geomechanics
Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
Course Structure Disclaimer
Curtin University reserves the right to alter the internal composition of any course to ensure learning outcomes retain maximum relevance. Any changes to the internal composition of a course will protect the right of students to complete the course within the normal timeframe and will not result in additional cost to students through a requirement to undertake additional units.
