Syllabus: The fundamentals of corrosion chemistry, chemical and electrochemical reaction in corrosion, corrosion cells, standard and non standard potentials, the Nernst equation, electrochemical kinetics, current voltage relationships, metals, alloys and corrosion, localised corrosion and electrochemical heterogeneity, corrosion testing and monitoring techniques, corrosion prevention principles, passivity, corrosion control by impeding electrochemical cell functions (e.g. design against corrosion, organic coatings)corrosion prevention by modifying electrochemical thermodynamics (e.g. cathodic protection) corrosion inhibition by influencing electrochemical kinetics (e.g. corrosion inhibitors and passivators) control and monitoring of localised corrosion.
