Syllabus: | This unit considers coastal resources in terms of the ecosystem services they provide and the communities they support, with emphasis on Australia and South East Asia. Issues covered include the impacts of industrial expansion, exploited wild-stock fisheries, coastal aquaculture, terrestrial and aquatic pollution, multiple land use demands, natural hazards and climate change. Students will study the effectiveness of management strategies employed to achieve sustainable use of coastal and oceanic resources, using case studies (with emphasis on commercial fisheries and aquaculture) from around the world, including developing countries. |
