Syllabus (HB): | This postgraduate unit will provide students with an understanding of the cultures and environments of the coastal peoples of the Indian Ocean Region. We explore the economic, political, cultural and environmental processes that affect coastal peoples' lives and their capacity to maintain sustainable livelihoods and environments. We examine coastal management strategies, their impacts on the coast and coastal peoples, and coastal peoples' responses. Finally, we assess the impact of climate variability and climate change on coastal peoples and their understandings of and reactions to such variability and change. |
