Introduction

This course has an emphasis on practical and theoretical occupational health and safety (OHS) skills with a strong mix of science and technical practical and theoretical knowledge in the core discipline areas of risk management and accident prevention, ergonomics, occupational hygiene, health and safety economics and management, and compensation and injury management. There is an emphasis on industry based assessment and the development of practical skills. Units are offered fully online. This course attracts students from a wide variety of professions and industries, from those who are already working in OHS and wish to gain formal qualifications to those intending to work in OHS, including engineers, doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, physical education/human movement science graduates, environmental health officers, teachers, engineers, chemists and many other occupations. Upon successful completion of this course, students may apply for admission into the Master of Occupational Health and Safety.

Course Entry Requisites/Prerequisites

A bachelor degree in an appropriate field or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary education institution with at least two years work experience.

Specific Requirements

Applicants for this course should refer to the Communicable Diseases and Criminal Record Screening and Clearance Section of this publication. Regular access to a computer and the Internet will be required to undertake all units.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This fee-paying course is four semesters part-time with study conducted on an external basis. Full-time study is available if required subject to availability of units.

Intermediate Awards 1

A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate award(s) approved for this course are:

Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety Management.

Course Organisation

This course consists of core units followed by a selection from a range of optional units. It is recommended that Accident Prevention and Safety Management 581 and Risk Management and Safety Technology 582 are completed first. The optional units providethe opportunity to specialise in specific areas of occupational health and safety. All units are offered in a fully online mode.

Professional Recognition

The course is recognised by several professional bodies including the Australian College of Occupational Medicine.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
