Syllabus: | The unit examines the belief system and practice of Islam within Southeast Asia, including how the religion has adapted to different social environments. The organising principle of the unit is to explore the inherent tension between Islam's universalising principles and local interpretations. The syllabus examines the historical birth and development of Islam and Sufism, but the major section of the unit will deal with such contemporary political and social debates as: Are there local forms of Islam? What accounts for the growing devoutness of middle class Muslim youth? Have local forms of Islamic feminism emerged? |
