Syllabus: Against a background of the history and discourse of social work practice in statutory settings, students examine the legislative and administrative base of policies and practice, and how to reconcile professional practice and statutory obligations; analyse contemporary issues focusing on child protection, criminal justice and mental health systems; how to work with involuntary clients in a range of settings; and learn about tasks such as risk assessments, case conferences, reports, interagency collaboration, while considering ethics in practice, issues of power and authority, self-determination, confidentiality and seeking opportunities for reflexivity and emancipatory practice.
