311553 v.1 Environmental Biology Double Degree Major (BSc/BEd)

Introduction

This double degree provides graduates with skills and qualifications to practice as a scientist in industry and/or as a teacher in secondary schools. It provides opportunities to combine rigorous study in Environmental Biology (the major), with support studies in another teaching area of their choice. It is designed to give graduates a broad but integrated background in biology and the necessary skills for effective classroom communication at the secondary school level. The firm grounding in biology will provide graduates with employment opportunities in careers associated with the environment as well as the teaching profession. The intent is to produce graduates with teaching skills and a sound foundation in a science discipline.

Major Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

None. At least one TEE science subject and one TEE mathematics subject desirable. Applicants with good overall academic records at the year 12 level may substitute Discrete Mathematics for Applicable Mathematics.

Specific Requirements

The Faculty of Education requires all secondary education students to pass a literacy, numeracy and ICT competency test in the first year of the degree. Students who do not pass will be required to undertake additional study in order to meet competency requirements in these areas. Professional practice in school settings is a core requirement of the degree and may involve out of semester commitment by students. Applicants for this course should refer to the criminal record screening and clearance sectionof this publication. Students enrolled in the double degree must pass all units in the education component to gain accreditation and must successfully complete the major stream in biology. STAT elements considered are E and either V or Q.

Duration and Availability

4 years' full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Professional Recognition

This course is recognised nationally as an initial pre-service teaching qualification. Graduates will be eligible for membership of the Australian Institute of Biology.
