This course develops skills in, and knowledge, understanding and appreciation of, contemporary social issues, and heightened skills in social research and analysis. It assists in career development, preparing students for new employment opportunities in a variety of public and private sector contexts that require social scientific research and analytical skills. It is designed to complement existing knowledge gained from an undergraduate qualification in any recognised area including business, humanities, sciences and education. It also combines a general qualification with more specific educational opportunities, enabling students learn in a way that best suits existing needs and priorities.
A bachelors degree with an appropriate level of achievement in any field of study from a recognised tertiary education institution. Students may also gain entry through completion of the Graduate Diploma in Sustainability Studies and transfer to this course after successful completion of the first half of that course.
Creative overlap between current employment and study is emphasised with students awarded credit for prior learning and demonstrated existing skills.
This fee-paying course is three semesters full-time or equivalent part-time study.
A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate award(s) approved for this course are:
Graduate Certificate in Sustainability Studies; Graduate Diploma in Sustainability Studies.
Students are required to complete at least one-third of their program via individual, supervised research or production projects at an advanced level, developing highly sophisticated skills in research, analysis, communication and reflection. There may be opportunities for practicum combinations of study and work.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
