Syllabus: The broad goal of this unit is to improve students' ability to engage critically with the culture in which they live via a wide variety of written and audio-visual materials, texts and sources, understanding how meaning is constructed through a system ofsigns and the rules of their combinations; and the interaction of the producers ("authors") of texts, the consumers or readers of those texts and the texts themselves (and, remember, anything meaningful can be a text).
