The Postgraduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing consists of both the Mental Health Nursing Stream and the Advanced Mental Health Nursing Stream. The Mental Health Nursing Stream is designed for registered nurses seeking a career pathway in the mental health care system. The Advanced Mental Health Nursing Stream is for nurses currently working in the mental health area who wish to further enhance their knowledge and skills. Students in both streams graduate with the Postgraduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing with is recognised by the Nurses and Midwives Board of Western Australia as stated under section 31(2)(b) of the Nurses and Midwives Act 2006.
Applicants must be registered in Division One with the Nurses and Midwives Board in a state of Australia as a comprehensive or general nurse with a Bachelor of Science (Nursing), or its equivalent. Alternate entry will be offered to nurses registered in Division One with the Nurses and Midwives Board of Western Australia.
Students require a Criminal Record Screening and Clearance before commencing the course.
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
This fee-paying course is one year full time duration or equivalent part time.
Students taking the Mental Health Nursing Stream will complete three units at Curtin and three units at Murdoch University. There are two clinical practice units in an approved mental health care facility under the preceptorship of a mental health nurse and students will complete a 1000 hour clinical component. Those completing the Advanced Mental Health Nursing Stream will complete a 60 hour learning contract long with core units and an option.
Graduates will be able to seek employment in many areas of the health care system. In addition graduates of this course may be employed within other work environments such as the justice system. The course will provide nurses with increased knowledge and skills that will facilitate career development and promotional opportunities.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
