This research degree provides an opportunity for students to develop and apply research skills in order to understand challenges and successfully solve problems in urban and regional planning. It can provide the basis for progression into a PhD candidacyand is suitable for recent graduates or experienced practitioners who wish to investigate a research issue.
A relevant degree with a semester weighted average (SWA) of 70 per cent or better or an equivalent qualification. Applicants with a SWA of less than 70 per cent are required to undertake appropriate bridging units. Selection is based on academic performance, the potential to undertake research, professional references and an interview.
The course is by research and normally requires one to two years of full-time or equivalent part-time study. Course duration may be influenced by the discipline previously studied.
This course is studied as a research degree. The content of the degree should be determined in consultation with the Postgraduate Coordinator of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. Students without prior studies in research methods and statistical data analysis will be required to undertake relevant preparatory units. This will increase the stated course duration.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
It is a requirement that two-thirds of this course is undertaken by research and only one-third by coursework.
