| UNIT REFERENCES, TEXTS, OUTCOMES AND ASSESSMENT DETAILS: | The most up-to-date information about unit references, texts and outcomes, will be provided in the unit outline. |
| Syllabus: | Through a historical and critical exploration of material and virtual objects, this unit challenges the assumption that design innovation is culturally and technologicaly determined through market forces. This unit enables students to investigate and critique aspects of design relevant to their interests whilst introducing methodologies for creative practice and academic writing skills. The unit aims to contribute to the student's future design roles as reflective practitioners who are able to incorporate critical and self-directed enquiry into their personal and/or commercial practice. It is expected that students will be able to identify key concepts and practitioners through a process of textual analysis and a survey of their relevant design field. To enable this, the unit introduces a range of contemporary concepts and established philosophical enquiries that intersect both design practice and wider social concerns. Students will also identify particular methods and methodologies which may aid in achieving future outcomes. Further, the unit also promotes the role of self-directed experimentation and material investigation in an effort to challenge perceptions and produce new insights within the particular fields of contemporary design culture being investigated. |
