| Syllabus: | Design for the 21st Century is an ethical and transdisciplinary practice which relies on a 'responsible' worldview. In this unit, design issues are examined within the context of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the principles of the circular economy and the emergence of 'design for good'. The unit is about making design relevant to contemporary life and - using the words of David Carlson - about 'making design matter'. Students will examine design issues through a local, national and or global lens to address the 'why of design' through an interrogation of the role of the designer in making meaningful contributions to the societies in which they live. Design can be a form of storytelling, and the unit explores the significance of narrative embedded within designerly objects, systems and processes and the subsequent power this can wield. |
