| Syllabus: | Design Thinking, Computational Design, Biodesign, Life Design, DesignX, Speculative Design and Legal Design are only a few of the more recent design paradigms emergent from design theory and practice. In this unit you will explore how paradigms shape design, science and academic knowledge and how these ideas become either popular or over-used, rejected or redefined. The unit explores the key paradigms that have emerged in design since the mid-19th Century and how the ideas from pioneers in the field influence design practice, research and teaching today. Through this unit, you will be able to navigate the complex and contradictory world of design paradigms and reflect on those that are likely to shape design practice for the future. You will learn how the rhetoric of certain design paradigms are received by public and expert audiences and be able to identify, shape and use ideas in design that are likely to maintain longevity and relevance to practice. |
