| Syllabus: | In nutritional biochemistry and human metabolism, students expand on their knowledge of the metabolism of macronutrients in humans, and understand the role of tissue specific metabolism in whole body homeostasis. Amino acid and fatty acid metabolism are examined and their relationships with carbohydrate metabolism, and the maintenance of normal blood glucose concentrations is also investigated. The role and mechanisms by which insulin and glucagon control whole body metabolism following a meal, between meals, and during prolonged starvation is also examined along with the sources of energy during rest, moderate, and high intensity exercise. |
