MC-GEOSPI v.1 Master of Geospatial Intelligence
GradDipGeospaIntelli(Curtin)
Course CRICOS Code: 0100574
Registered full-time Duration:
2 Years
Course Overview
Master Degrees (Coursework) prepare students to apply advanced knowledge for professional practice, scholarship and further learning corresponding to AQF level 9 qualifications.
This course covers both the core and advanced techniques required for managing, analysing, combining and transforming location-based data and remotely sensed imagery to extract higher meaning (intelligence). The course provides students with the opportunity to strengthen their knowledge and skills in geospatial intelligence by undertaking a significant location-based problem and producing a report over two semesters. Subject areas can be student, supervisor or industry led and preferably a combination of all three. Topics generally range from biodiversity, agriculture, urban planning, mining, defence, and emergency services, but are not restricted to these. It is designed for “up-skillers” or those seeking a career path change or a boost in their career progress. This course is available on-campus and by distance education (via online learning) to Australian and International students.
Career Opportunities
Graduates are able to pursue careers in geographic information science and the broader spatial sciences.
Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks and other essential study materials.
Course Entry and Completion Details
Applicants for a Master Degree (Coursework) are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://study.curtin.edu.au/. Subject to the duration of the course applicants usually require a Bachelor Degree or equivalent (and may require relevant work experience), Bachelor Honours Degree, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma. All Curtin courses have compulsory and other core capabilities that are essential for demonstrating the achievement of course learning outcomes and graduation. Students who are unable to meet or demonstrate those requirements, now or in later stages during their studies, may seek reasonable adjustments by the University wherever possible to facilitate alternative ways of achieving those requirements. If reasonable adjustments cannot be accommodated, Curtin will discuss study options to find an alternative course of study or an exit degree. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.
Specifically, applicants require a recognised Bachelor Degree in any discipline.
Credit for Recognised Learning
Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Further information can be found at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au/non-school-leavers/rpl.cfm
Pathway to Further Study
Graduates may qualify for entry to Doctoral degrees. For further details, see the University website http://curtin.edu.au
Course Organisation
Master Degrees (Coursework) contain a series of units in a specialised area of study which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. They may also contain a range of majors/streams for students to choose from.
This course comprises 14 units (13 core and 1 alternate core) taught over four semesters in the field of Geospatial Intelligence. It can be studied on a full-time or part-time basis. Alternate core units are photogrammetry or cartographic mapping, which are available in Semester 1 of the degree. Geographic information systems and remote sensing skills and web mapping are the other three units taught in the first semester. Geographic information systems and remote sensing skills are broadened in the second semester and taught with programming and spatial database management. The third semester teaches students how to analyse spatial data, critically review literature, source data and begin their major project. The final semester teaches dataset integration and modelling, particularly in the field of location-allocation and strengthens scripting prowess for the automation of complex tasks. It also requires the completion of the student’s final project. There may be occasions in this course where students study units and attend classes co-taught with undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in other courses.
Course Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. apply advanced principles of geospatial technology to a range of application areas
2. critically analyse spatial data and issues to devise novel and appropriate solutions
3. investigate and select appropriate datasets/imagery and software to analyse, transform, and present findings using methods suitable to specialist and non-specialist audiences
4. recognise and be engaged in spatial issues that occur in other countries and/or on global scales
5. appreciate and interact with people across different cultures and respect different perspectives
6. collaborate with industry to develop professional initiative, problem solving ability, team and communication skills as well as gain exposure to real-world, location-based, problems
Duration and Availability
This course is two years full time or equivalent part time study. Flexible modes of program delivery are utilised and the course is available on campus as well as fully online. Part time and external study is only available to Australian resident students and international students studying outside Australia. Two intakes in February and July.
