Course Overview
Graduate Diplomas prepare students to develop advanced knowledge and skills for professional or highly skilled work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 8 qualifications.
The course provides a knowledge and understanding of core areas of mineral processing and extractive metallurgy. It is designed for non-metallurgy scientists or engineers who wish to pursue a career in the minerals industry as an extractive metallurgist.
Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, and other essential study materials. A number of required units have on-campus (WASM Kalgoorlie) laboratory requirements and all travel or accommodation expenses are met by the student.
Course Entry and Completion Details
Applicants for a Graduate Diploma are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://study.curtin.edu.au/. Applicants generally require a Bachelor Degree or Graduate Certificate. All Curtin courses have compulsory and other core capabilities that are essential for demonstrating the achievement of course learning outcomes and graduation. Students who are unable to meet or demonstrate those requirements, now or in later stages during their studies, may seek reasonable adjustments by the University wherever possible to facilitate alternative ways of achieving those requirements. If reasonable adjustments cannot be accommodated, Curtin will discuss study options to find an alternative course of study or an exit degree. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.
Specifically, applicants require an Australian recognised bachelor degree in an engineering or science discipline, excluding extractive metallurgy or equivalent qualifications. Applicants with sufficient work or other relevant experience may be eligible, either through a not-for-degree pathway or direct entry.

Course Organisation
Graduate Diplomas contain a series of units which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. They may contain a range of majors/streams for students to choose from to pursue learning in a specialised area of study.
Course Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. apply extractive metallurgy knowledge, principles and concepts to the practice of the mining/metallurgy profession including research at graduate level
2. demonstrate graduate level critical and creative thinking ability in the practice of the mining/metallurgy profession
3. evaluate, synthesise and communicate information and contextualise it to the practice of extractive metallurgy / mining engineering applicable to stakeholders, using written or oral presentations
4. demonstrate responsibility and team-skills by applying critical reflection, evaluation and proactively manage teamwork, recognising the need to apply and evaluate international best practice standards in the mining/metallurgical workplace
5. recognise the impact and importance of cultural diversity in the implementation of mining/metallurgical projects with a respect for cultural perspectives and practices
6. work in accordance with professional standards and demonstrate responsibility towards the broader community

This fee paying course is one year full-time or equivalent part-time study. The course is also available on an external study basis.
