| Syllabus: | Modern Physics assumes that students have completed Physics ATAR and Mathematics Methods ATAR or equivalent. This unit is recommended for students that have completed either PHYS1005 Physics 1 or PHYS1004 Physical Measurements or are enrolled in an Engineering discipline. The course explores two pillars of modern physics: quantum mechanics and relativity. The study of quantum mechanics begins with its origins in the photoelectric effect and leads up to the time independent solution of Schrodinger's wave equation. An introduction to both general and special relativity is included. This course includes a laboratory component which will involve experiments and computer simulations that are linked to the lecture material and will give students experience and understanding in measurement and uncertainties, physical data analysis and report writing. |
| Additional Requisite Information: | PHYS1003 Modern Physics should not be taken concurrently with PHYS1004 Physical Measurements. Students wishing to take both these units should enrol in PHYS1007 Physics 2. |
