| Syllabus: | This unit will provide students with the opportunity to undertake legal workplace experience in a dedicated clinical legal education environment; to enable students to apply, test and reflect on what has been learned; to develop an understanding of the nature of legal practice; and to work under the supervision of an experienced practising lawyer. The student will complete a 10 week period of workplace experience in the John Curtin Law Clinic during which they will: (a) have primary, supervised responsibility for real client files; attend guided visits to various courts, tribunals and commissions; and participate in in-house professional skills training and workshops; and (b) complete tasks on client matters which require them to analyse client instructions and prepare documents for client engagement; meet with clients and take instructions; make file notes; review client documents; record time and use a recognised legal practice management software to manage client files; carry out legal research; provide advice on commercial legal issues; critically analyse legal issues; draft letters of advice; and draft correspondence and court documents. |
