| Syllabus: | This unit enables students to participate in programmed sessions dealing with communication and patient interaction skills, clinical procedures, history taking and physical examination in medical practice. Knowledge, skills and procedures are reinforced and developed and include clinical interviewing, communication skills, history taking, physical examination, intimate examinations, verbal and written presentation skills, clinical procedures, first aid, resuscitation, basic and intermediate emergency care, ethical and legal concerns related to clinical skills; personal development, student-patient, student-hospital, student-doctor and student-allied health professional relationships; the effects of gender, class and ethnicity on communication and the development of professional relationships. Students study clinical cases to understand and apply the scientific basis of medicine including: knowledge of the normal structure and function of the human body at the molecular, cellular, organ and total individual levels of organisation; the changes that occur as a result of disease and injury including the aetiology of disease processes and relevant psychosocial issues. Factors affecting outcome and transmission of disease are also covered. Topics deal with the gastrointestinal, endocrine, reproductive, nervous systems (both neurology and psychiatry), and musculoskeletal system. Theories underlying public health, resource allocation, pharmaceutical-industry relations, ethical practice, health law, indigenous health and cultural awareness are investigated. |
