| Syllabus: | Infectious diseases are a major threat to human health, particularly as more pathogens become resistant to current antimicrobial and antiviral therapy. This unit is designed to develop students’ knowledge of the microorganisms involved in infectious diseases, with a focus on molecular evolution and how it contributes to the emergence and re-emergence of bacterial and viral pathogens with increased antimicrobial resistance and virulence. Modern sequence-based analyses of microbial pathogenesis, offers new insights and solutions for the surveillance, prevention and control of infectious diseases. The unit focuses on infection control and prevention strategies for bacterial and viral infections transmitted through multiple routes. Unique to this unit is the opportunity to gain practical knowledge and microbiology laboratory experience. |
