MClinExPhysiol(Curtin)
Course CRICOS Code: 097865D
Registered full-time Duration:
1.5 Years
Course Overview
Master Degrees (Coursework) prepare students to apply advanced knowledge for professional practice, scholarship and further learning corresponding to AQF level 9 qualifications.
This course has been developed to provide graduates with the opportunity to expand their knowledge in the field of clinical exercise physiology across a range of target pathologies and population groups. Students are provided with advanced theoretical knowledge, contemporary clinical experience and research opportunities for the development of quality improvement programs for exercise rehabilitation in a clinical setting.
Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks and other essential study materials.
Course Entry and Completion Details
Applicants for a Master Degree (Coursework) are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au. Subject to the duration of the course applicants usually require a Bachelor Degree or equivalent (and may require relevant work experience), Bachelor Honours Degree, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.
Specifically, applicants require a three-year Bachelor degree in Exercise and Sport Science or Human Movement from an Exercise and Sports Science Australia level 1 accredited course with a CWA (course weighted average) of at least 60.
Credit for Recognised Learning
Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Further information can be found at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au/non-school-leavers/rpl.cfm
Pathway to Further Study
Graduates may qualify for entry to Doctoral degrees. For further details, see the Graduate Research School website http://research.curtin.edu.au/postgraduate-research/future-research-students/entry-requirements/
Course Entry/Completion Note
Applicants for this course should refer to the Faculty website for more information on Communicable Diseases and Criminal Record Screening and Clearance.
Course Organisation
Master Degrees (Coursework) contain a series of units in a specialised area of study which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. They may also contain a range of majors/streams for students to choose from.
This is a dynamic course based on contemporary best practice. The course focuses on both clinical evidence and current concepts in rehabilitation practice relevant to exercise physiology. Development of advanced understanding of a complex body of knowledge that will allow for critical thinking, clinical reasoning and competent design, delivery and modification of exercise programs for rehabilitation are promoted through interactive teaching and supervised clinical practice. Students will have the opportunity to undertake research in clinical practice for exercise rehabilitation. Professionalism, clinical leadership and excellence in client management are expected graduate attributes.
Course Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. apply clinical exercise physiology principles and approaches in the treatment and management of persons at high risk of developing, or with existing chronic and complex clinical presentations drawing upon current research to guide clinical decision making
2. incorporate creativity and initiative to formulate, implement and critically evaluate effective exercise physiology practice
3. source and synthesise complex information and evidence using a range of technologies; apply professional and independent judgement to exercise physiology practice
4. exemplify highly developed communication and technical skills, both written and verbal, to effectively design, apply and justify professional practice with clients, health professionals and stakeholders
5. integrate appropriate technologies to create, amend and validate exercise interventions and professional decisions based on scientific evidence and clinical reasoning
6. apply a commitment to professional and personal development in the field of clinical exercise through educational engagement and on-going learning, self-evaluation of practice, and advocacy for exercise physiology
7. understand and promote a global health care perspective in regards to exercise physiology practice
8. support and respect individual human rights and cultural diversity in regards to exercise physiology services within a variety of settings
9. independently and through inter-professional working relationships, apply professional and ethical skills and behaviour across a range of professional settings
