Course Overview
Graduate Certificates prepare students to develop advanced knowledge and skills for professional or highly skilled work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 8 qualifications.
This course is designed for students seeking an introduction to their chosen discipline in the Arts through one semester of full-time study (or part-time equivalent). As well as learning and practicing fundamental skills in a chosen field, students undertaking the Graduate Certificate will develop critical, analytical and creative capacities for conceiving works or projects for future professional or community engagements.

Course Entry and Completion Details
Applicants for a Graduate Certificate are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au. Applicants generally require a Bachelor Degree or equivalent credit gained for recognised learning. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.
Credit for Recognised Learning
Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Course Organisation
Graduate Certificates contain a series of units which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences.
This course includes three units that introduce students to fundamental skills in their chosen field, and a fourth unit enabling them to develop their critical and creative capacity for applying these skills and knowledge in conceiving a project or portfolio work that could be implemented upon graduation through their professional, creative, scholarly or community engagements. This course provides a credited pathway into the Master of Arts course at Curtin University.
Course Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. understand the chosen discipline from the Arts, its theoretical underpinnings, ways of thinking and professional or creative approaches; understand and apply established knowledge, principles and key disciplinary concepts
2. apply logical processes as well as rational or theoretical and methodological processes to analyse an issue or components of a subject through critical engagement
3. determine what information is needed by accessing and evaluating the sources, authority and relevance of information; summarize information from a range of sources, and make valid judgements about the information
4. communicate appropriately with colleagues, professional and creative contacts and the general public and develop communication skills or media practices to communicate specific ideas and requirements to different audiences in varying situations
5. assess the application of existing technologies or the impact of emerging technologies on a selected discipline; develop the technology skills necessary for obtaining, assessing and representing relevant information; decide on appropriate applications and systems for professional and/or creative needs
6. understand and apply a range of learning strategies; take responsibility for one's own learning and development; use disciplinary skills and knowledge to sustain intellectual curiosity in order to enhance learning strategies
7. think globally and consider issues from a variety of perspectives
8. acknowledge the interrelationship between local, national, and global perspectives and the impact of these on media and communication, show an understanding of a range of cultural knowledge, recognize individual human rights, and appreciate the importance of cultural diversity and the sensitivities
9. apply appropriate professional skills in the creation of professional and/or creative works or understand the importance of appropriate theories and methods for undertaking social research that is ethical and principled; work independently and in teams; understand professional and scholarly behaviour and model ethical behaviour to colleagues
