Cellular physiology - cell membrane structure and composition. Active and passive mechanisms of membrane transport. Membrane potential. Movement of water and solutes across epithelia. Mechanisms of absorption (small intestine, kidney and gall bladder), mechanisms of secretion (salivary, pancreatic and stomach glands and kidney), cellular metabolism, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and cellular energy transfer. Glycolysis and Krebs cycle. ETS. Oxidative phosphorylation. Nerve/muscle - action potentials. Neuromuscular potentials. Neuromuscular transmission. Pacemaker cells. Electrophysiology of the heart. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) function. Skeletal, cardiac and smooth muscle. Cell communication. Chemical signalling. Receptors and signal transduction. Intracellular messengers. Principles of endocrinology. Hypothalamic-pituitary interactions. Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroid hormone. Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and adrenal hormone. Luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) regulation of reproduction. Gastro-intestinal hormones. Energy metabolism - fuel homeostasis and metabolic rate.
