Syllabus:

Environmental Geochemistry - principles of environmental geochemistry. Quantifying contamination and pollution of the natural environment. Contaminant speciation and the role of water, colloids and organic materials in chemical pollution. Geochemical-biological interactions and toxicity. Mining pollution, estuarine pollution and urban geochemistry. Environmental geochemical analysis and the practical study of contaminated urban and/or mining sites. Environmental Geology - coastal management and changes in coastal marine environments. Palaeoecology and interpretation of palaeoenvironments. Principles and practicalities of waste disposal. Geohazards, seismic hazards and landslides. Physical characteristics of soil, soil erosion and subsidence. Tailings and mined waste rock disposal. Groundwater pollution.
