This double degree course provides students with an integrated education in both surveying and commerce. It provides dual qualifications in these areas and develops graduates with unique opportunities to utilise enhanced knowledge and expertise in small business management within the surveying industry. Surveying is a high technology area which includes satellite positioning, laser scanning, airborne and marine navigation, digital mapping and remote sensing, environmental management and many more. The Bachelor of Commerce program places an emphasis on decision-making, trends in technology and associated work patterns and other aspects of management and provides a high level of understanding of issues in small business development and management.
TEE Aplicable Mathematics. Alternative mathematics units are available for applicants who have completed Discrete Mathematics.
STAT elements considered are E and Q.
Students will normally be expected to have attained a higher Tertiary Entrance Rank than is required for both single degrees.
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
The course is five years full-time or equivalent part-time study.
The surveying course commences with basic studies in the areas of mathematics, science and computing, with an introduction to surveying and mapping subjects. The following years expand the student's knowledge into more specialised areas of surveying and mapping using advanced field equipment and modern computing and image processing facilities. The final year of the course has an emphasis on the professional aspects of the surveying area. Throughout the course, classroom studies are supplemented by laboratory sessions involving practical experience with a wide range of high technology computing and data collection equipment such as GPS receivers available at Curtin. Flexible learning approaches are a feature of the surveying degree with extensive use ofonline learning. Curtin's undergraduate commerce programs are designed to provide professional expertise in the major area of study, as well as a range of other skills that are highly valued in the commercial world. Besides theoretical concepts, the program also emphasises the application of knowledge to commerce and industry.
Graduates of the bachelor degree in surveying are eligible for membership of the Spatial Sciences Institute.
Excellent career prospects exist for surveying graduates as private surveying and mapping consultants or as registered surveyors under the Licensed Surveyors Act (Western Australia) both in Australia and internationally. Many opportunities are also available with local, state and federal governments. Surveyors are employed in many specialist areas including land and cadastral surveying, engineering and mine surveying, satellite positioning and navigation, gravity measurements, aerial photogrammetry, satellite remote sensing, hydrographic surveying, land information management and land planning. A commerce degree is very relevant to the requirements of today's business world, with the emphasis on decision-making, trends in technology and associated work patterns, and other aspects of management in today's highly competitive business arena. Many Curtin commerce graduates are in senior management positions in Australia and internationally. The combination of surveying and entrepreneurship provides synergistic advantages for career development and graduates will be well qualified in small business management and be in demand for senior management positions in large public and private organisations.
