Introduction

This professional research degree combines research and production with coursework in one or more of the following areas - creative writing (poetry, prose, script-writing for film, radio, stage, and television), performance studies and professional writing and publishing practice. It is designed for practitioners intending to update knowledge of contemporary theory and current practice, recently graduated students intending to develop knowledge and skills in a certain area, current students continuing study for specific personal or professional goals, teachers and those intending to become teachers, and students from overseas seeking creative and/or practical study opportunities in Australia.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

An approved honours degree, or postgraduate diploma with well above average marks (usually an average of at least 70), and have adequate training in contemporary literary and cultural theories. Applicants without necessary preparation are required to undertake bridging units, or an appropriate honours unit.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning for coursework components are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

The course is by research and normally requires one to two years of full-time or equivalent part-time study. The course is also available in part-time mode.

Course Organisation

This course is studied as a research degree. The content of the degree should be determined in consultation with the Postgraduate Coordinator of the Department of Communication and Cultural Studies.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.

Special Note

It is a requirement that two-thirds of this course is undertaken by research and only one-third by coursework. Students should not enrol in this research course to receive the Postgraduate or Graduate Diploma in Communication and Cultural Studies but rather have undertaken it as a requisite for admission.
