303283 v.1 Bachelor of Engineering (Minerals Engineering), Bachelor of Science (Mining)

BEng(Curtin), BSc(Curtin)

Course CRICOS Code: 050571F
Registered full-time Duration for International Onshore Students on student visas: 5 Years

Introduction

This double degree equips students to work in a professional capacity in both minerals engineering and mining engineering areas of the minerals and energy industries, through a strategic alliance between the Western Australia School of Mines' minerals engineering and mining engineering programs. In the engineering degree students major in minerals engineering. In the science degree, students major in mining technology. Minerals engineering requires a sound knowledge and understanding of chemistry and theprinciples of engineering, particularly chemical engineering. Mineral engineers are involved in plant design, development, operations and control management and research. Mining engineers are responsible for the design, planning and operation of a mine. Many responsibilities are defined by law. Management of underground mines is restricted to mining engineering graduates.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

TEE Applicable Mathematics, Calculus, Chemistry and Physics.

Specific Requirements

In order to be adequately trained as a professional engineer, it is mandatory that the student undertakes 12 weeks of relevant practical experience during the course. Students will be required to complete an approved First Aid course prior to being eligible for course completion. STAT elements considered are E and Q.

Duration and Availability

This course is five years full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Course Organisation

The first two years of the course may be undertaken either on the Bentley or Kalgoorlie Campus. The first six semesters focus particularly on minerals engineering, semesters seven and eight focus on mining engineering and semesters nine and 10 complete the minerals engineering major. The professional years, three to five, are studied in Kalgoorlie.

Professional Recognition

The engineering degree is accredited by the Institute of Engineers, Australia. Graduates are also eligible for membership of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

Additional Course Expenses

Students are expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials. Students will require a laboratory coat.
