BSc(Curtin)

Course CRICOS Code: 003885M
Registered full-time Duration for International Onshore Students on student visas: 3 Years

Introduction

This course (formerly Bachelor of Science (Multidisciplinary Science)) provides students with opportunities to combine rigorous study in one science subject area taken from mathematics, chemistry, physics, geology, or computing (the 'major') with supportstudies in an area or areas of their choice (the 'minor'). The intent is to provide a means of response to the rapidly changing needs of society, which rarely fit exactly within the traditional boundaries of scientific disciplines. Graduates emerge with asound background in their chosen stream area, and with a greater ability to adapt to problems covered in their minor studies than would otherwise be the case.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

For the Bentley Campus, at least one TEE mathematics subject and at least one of TEE physics, chemistry, physical science or biology.

Specific Requirements

STAT elements considered are E, V and Q. The course regulations are framed to maintain a uniformity of academic achievement without restricting options unnecessarily. Thus in order to complete the three year degree, the requirement is that a minimum of24 full (25 credits) Curtin units must be completed. Of these, a maximum of 11 units may be at first year level and a minimum of four units at a third year level, in the chosen major studies area and including at least one unit of a project nature. Successful completion of a communication skills unit, a mathematics unit and an information technology unit is also required.

Note

Students with a limited science background will find that a wide range of possibilities remain open. Bridging units are available either before or during the first semester of study. Students who have not studied Applicable Mathematics should consult theCourse Coordinator.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. Credit transfers from other institutions and recognition of prior learning based on industrial experience may be granted.

Duration and Availability

The course is three years full-time or equivalent part-time study. Two intakes are offered each year in March and August. Prospective students should note that places may not always be available for the August intake.

Course Organisation

Units are selected in consultation with the Course Coordinator.

Career Opportunities

There are many areas in which multidisciplinary science studies are valuable. Technological developments often bridge gaps between chemistry, physics and engineering, government employment generally requires a science with a business or social science background, a teacher who only takes classes in one discipline is at best a rarity. The flexibility of the program permits students to plan their own course according to the employment opportunities they perceive.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
