Syllabus: | A comprehensive clinical laboratory study of haemopoiesis, cell metabolism, function, survival and procedures for the investigation of haematological disorders. A detailed study of normal and aberrant haemostasis, platelet function and clinical laboratory investigation of specific disorders. Blood group systems, laboratory investigation of clinically significant antibodies. Case studies. Utilisation, maintenance and calibration of related instrumentation. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will have- Developed knowledge of practical expertise by a theoretical and practical study of procedures associated with the laboratory diagnosis of disorders of the blood. Introduction to both theoretical and practical aspects of haematology. Developed skills to competently perform both basic and advanced haematological and blood transfusion serological techniques and be able to apply these investigations to laboratory diagnosis of disorders of the blood. Understanding of the theoretical basis of a variety of haematological disorders and the principles of methods selected to assist diagnosis including result interpretation. Demonstrated good laboratory practice. Demonstrated good skills for the performance and interpretation of haematological laboratory procedures. Understanding of how laboratory measurements are interpreted with respect to the diagnosis of disease. Demonstrated knowledge of advanced aspects relating to theoretical and diagnostic haematology. |
