Syllabus:Eucaryotic and prokaryotic cells, endoparasites and ectoparasites, molecular biochemistry, genetic diseases and inborn errors of metabolism, chromosomal disorders and teratogenesis. Disorders of fluid and electrolyte balance. Nervous system. Central and autonomic types of receptors. Higher centre function. Introduction to endocrinology.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have - Demonstrated an introductory knowledge of basic biochemical mechanisms in relation to the structure and function of biological systems. Developed an appreciation of (with emphasis on possible sites of drug influence) the relationship between basic molecular events and the function and dysfunction of individual cells and the autonomic nervous system. developed an understanding of the problem of common parasitic infections in humans.
