Syllabus: | CPU structure and function - microprocessor principles, CPU architecture and bus types, ASCII/HEX conversion, Pentium Instruction sets, debug and assembler, branch instructions, addressing modes, flags, interrupts, video systems, serial and parallel I/O. Principles of interfacing - ADC/DAC principles, ADC/DAC systems and subsystems, interface manufacturers literature, IEEE 488 GPIB bus, digital video and audio, graphical control software, case studies and industry visit, student project seminars. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will have gained familiarization with principles of operations and assembly language programming of Microprocessors and selected I/O units. They will be able to design and implement PC based measurement, data collection and/or control systems and design and implement appropriate hardware and software commonly used for automated measurement and control. |
