Syllabus:The subject area - basic principles, concepts and procedures used in curriculum materials currently available. Selection and writing of objectives appropriate to different groups of students. Developing learning sequences in the subject area. Selecting materials and media. Evaluation - student progress, and of the course. Techniques for evaluating progress - place of evaluation in the subject and in the classroom. Provision for evaluation in curriculum materials and guides.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have - Become familiar with the content of the lower school Science Education in a time of transition from unit curriculum to implementation of the Curriculum Framework and Student Outcome Statements. Become familiar with assessment, grading, moderation, and levelling procedures in science learning area. Become familiar with different types of educational planning, including programming, lesson plans and the development of appropriate teaching resources. Developed a unit of work - course outcomes, time plan, teaching program, lesson plan, teaching resources and assessment items. Developed and understanding of a variety of appropriate teaching and learning strategies for Science Education. Demonstrated an understanding of a variety of assessment techniques and instruments and understood how they can be used to gather relevant information about student progress. Developed knowledge and skill in program and assessment development based on the Curriculum Framework for a selected lower school subject.

Unit Assessment Breakdown: Teaching program, including teaching strategies, assessment outline and resource list 40%, Construct a two sets of four detailed, sequential lessons plans on the same theme but one must be objective based (more teacher centred) and one must be outcome based (more student centred) 20%, Three Assessment Tasks for the program you have written 40%, Attendance, punctuality, class and group participation, etc.. Up to 10% may be deducted for poor attendance and punctuality and total lack of group and class participation.
