Syllabus:Ferrous metallurgy, steelmaking - review of thermodynamics, steelmaking processes, impurities in steel, deoxidation, vacuum degassing. Non-ferrous metallurgy - melt chemistry, Western Australian processes - nickel matte smelting, ferro-silicon production, synthetic rutile kiln practice, gold roasting.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, students will have- An understanding of pyrometallurgical fundamentals with an emphasis on skill development and problem solving.
