Syllabus:	Theories of ageing. Demography of aged and psychosocial aspects of ageing. Age related changes in organ systems, drug dosage modifications and determinants of of altered drug responsiveness. Medication management reviews including - taking medication histories, developing patient profiles, assessment of drug related problems, patient care plans and patient monitoring techniques. Special problems of the elderly including - dementia, behaviour disorders, incontinence, immobility, etc. Common diseases in the elderly, complications in chronic drug therapy in the elderly. The clinical therapist's role in management of and communication with the elderly.
Unit Outcomes:	On successful completion of this unit students will have - Developed an understanding of the science of ageing and an appreciation of the social and physiological implications of ageing. Demonstrated an understanding of the altered drug response in the elderly. Developed a knowledge of common diseases and special problems in the elderly and their management. Developed an appreciation of drug related problems in the elderly including adverse drug reactions and compliance. Demonstrated an understanding of the aims of restorative care in the elderly. Developed the ability to undertake drug therapy monitoring in the elderly.

Unit Assessment Breakdown:	Assignments (2 per semester) 20%. Case Presentation 15%. Oral Examination 20%. Problem Oriented Written Examination 45%. This is by grade/mark assessment. It is essential for students to obtain a score of at least 45% in the final examination to pass this unit.
