Syllabus:The frameworks of occupational health and safety, risk assessment, hazard identification and control hierarchy. Principles of toxicology, occupational hygiene, ergonomics. Hazard of chemicals, noise, radiation, biological agents. Anthropometrics, lighting, muscle physiology, thermal climate, information processing, mental workload, circadian and intracardian variations, influence of stresses.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will be able to - Describe a system of generic risk assessment and the control hierarchy and apply these principles. Recognise and discuss the assessment of toxic materials and application of this information to workplace assessment. Describe the procedure for assessment of noise in the workplace. Formulate a report suitable for the provision of information relating to workplace hazards to a variety of readers. Understand the history and aims of ergonomics/human factors. Relate human physical performance of the design of work, equipment and environments. Relate human mental performance to the design of work, equipment and environments.
