Syllabus:

The legal system and law making. Constitutional responsibility for education. The statutory framework of education. Civil liability of teachers, and school authorities. Criminal liability of teachers. Legal aspects of educational administration. Anti discrimination laws and education. Emerging issues in education law.

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit, students will have developed and ability to identify, describe and define some of the characteristics and fundamental principles of the legal system operating in Western Australia. Describe the legal framework within which education operates in Western Australia. Explain some of the principles of law that govern the management of education in Western Australia. Analyse and evaluate court decisions dealing with a variety of legal issues in education. Identify legal issues arising in a variety of factual situations. Explain how a relevant principle of law might be applied in a given factual situation. Identify and explain some of the emerging issues in Education Law.
