Syllabus:Laboratory practice - biological specimens, requesting and interpreting laboratory tests, accuracy and precision, quality assurance. Instrumentation - photometry, microscopy. Haematology - structure, function and morphology of blood components, cell counting, structure and function of haemoglobin, platelets and reticulocytes, Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate and Red Blood Cells indices, blood counts, haematological diseases. Biochemistry - biomolecules, amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have - Knowledge of the introduction to basic theoretical and practical concepts of medical laboratory science. Demonstrated an understanding of good laboratory practice, including the significance of accuracy and precision in the laboratory, requesting and interpreting laboratory tests, quality assurance and biological specimens. Demonstrated practical and theoretical expertise related to instrumentation, including photometry and microscopy. Demonstrated practical and theoretical expertise related to haematology, including structure, function and morphology of the components of blood, cell counting, the role of haemoglobin, platelets and reticulocytes, laboratory interpretation of the Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate and Red Blood Cells indices, performance and laboratory interpretation of blood counts and haematological diseases. Demonstrated practical and theoretical expertise related to biochemistry, including biomolecules, amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids.
