Syllabus:Designed to introduce and formalise students with the post-compulsory secondary English syllabi and develop the skills they will need in order to be effective english teachers. Focuses on specific areas of concern to English teachers, for example, boys and literacy, development of inclusive curriculum and critical literacy. Students will undertake professional reading on these issues and will develop teaching/learning strategies which will ensure they are addressed in their classroom.
 
Unit Outcomes: On succcessful completion of this unit, students will have- Discussed the aims and philosophies of English at upper secondary level. Analysed and discussed the objectives and assessment requirements related to the various English courses offered at this level. Demonstrated a familiarity with the range of texts, print and non-print, examined in these courses. Formulated instructional objectives consistent with the needs and cognitive development of different groups of students. Demonstrated an awareness and competence in a variety of teaching techniques. Become familiar with the English 'Student Outcome Statements' and have had some experience assessing student levels. Constructed and resourced a four week program suitable for a specific upper School English Course. Examined, discussed and developed strategies which focus on specific areas of concern within the English course and English classroom, critical literacy, boys and literacy, inclusive curriculum. Engaged in professional reading tasks from relevant and contemporary Education Journals.
