Syllabus: | Meaning of colonialism, nationalism, and the peasantry. Interpreting Indian history, historical background to Indian nationalism, major stages in the development of the Indian nationalist movement. Indian nationalist movement. Gandhi and the peasants, Gandhi and the pacification of the Indian national revolution, Case studies of agrarian unrest. Congress, peasants and elections. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Understood the key concepts associated with the rise of colonialism and the development of nationalism in India. Located the key events in this process. Described the main processes which characterised the nationalist movement. Demonstrated an awareness of the problematic nature of historical interpretation. |
