Syllabus:To introduce the meaning and purpose of planning. Description of the evolution of planning thought and practice. Characteristics of the planning system in Western Australia.
 
Unit Outcomes: This unit is designed for prospectyive planning postgraduate students with 1st degrees in disciplines other than planning. Upon completion of this unit students will have - Developed an understanding of the origins of planning (philosophy, purpose), the evolution of planning in Western Australia and the current planning system in Western Australia. Developed an understandingof subdivision and suburban planning, and local, metropolitan, and non-metropolitan planning. Gained understanding of transport andrural planning and urban design.
